office furniture industry back on track.

by:DIgao     2020-08-09
Continued consumer optimism and integration within the industry has excited office and contract furniture manufacturers for 2000.
THOUGH TOTAL U. S.
Office furniture shipments have fallen for the first time since George Bush took office in the Oval Office, with major furniture makers still seeing 1999 as a profitable year, according to the survey of wood and wood products in the 12-year contract furniture industry. Nearly three-
Respondents to the W & WP survey said that 1999 of people were either \"very good\" for their respective companies or \"the best year ever \".
The remaining 27% of respondents said their company was rated \"fair\" in terms of overall business last year \".
These answers are encouraging given the support of commercial and institutional furniture manufacturers. --
International data show that industrial shipments actually fell nearly 1% last year. (
See the 90-page chart. )
Reduced to $12.
24 billion is the industry\'s first decline since furniture shipments fell by more than 8% in 1991.
Thomas Ryden, executive vice president of BIFMA, said that although dollar shipments were lower than in 1998, this figure should be considered in combination with the industry as a whole.
\"Some companies may have increased their profits by 15 to 20%, while orders from larger manufacturers may be reduced,\" says Leiden.
This is what happens a lot of times.
We \'ve seen some smaller manufacturers really have good years.
\"2000 prospects: excellent surveyed manufacturers seem ready to build on the success of 1999, and 94% of surveyed executives expect to do the same or more business in 2000.
Only 6% of respondents believe that 2000 will lead to a decline in sales in their respective companies.
Although statistics were only available in the first two months of 2000, BIFMA\'s data showed that sales in the industry increased by 6% compared to January and last February.
This percentage is in line with BIFMA\'s forecast for the association\'s total growth of 4-6% in 2000 last year.
\"Now, the industry looks very good,\" says Leiden . \".
\"Manufacturers are very optimistic and positive now.
This optimism has been replaced by other manufacturers and consumers.
People seem very optimistic about what will come in the next 12 months.
\"Although the shipment value of contract manufacturers fell for the first time since 1991 last year, most executives surveyed still believe that last year was a good year for the industry and profits will increase this year.
\"We saw an excellent sale of timber case items in 1999,\" said Haworth Inc . \"
Chuck Mueller.
\"We also made physical sales on wooden chairs and launched new products.
\"The company also mentioned their commitment to niche and the role niche markets play in helping them increase their profits.
By developing these segments, the company has established its position and demonstrated to other companies the key to long-term development
Survival period.
\"We focus on our major niche markets and remain loyal and true,\" said Philip Swy of MTS Seati . \".
\"Our main focus is on this area.
This is not rocket science.
We just feel like the company has a commitment to specific niche customers.
\"As there have been several high-profile mergers and acquisitions since last May, the merger has helped to drive the consolidation of the market industry to continue.
Some are designed to promote the market.
Other companies merged with businesses offering access to previously untapped markets, expanding and increasing opportunities for profit and future expansion.
\"I think we will continue to see (
(M & A)
In the industry, \"says Leiden.
\"It\'s a healthy thing.
This could be a very positive event and for the big manufacturers this year, I think it works well for all the parties involved.
\"The leading way is to buy Chicago, IL-
Headquartered in Shelby Williams Industries, ranked 11 out of last year\'s top 25 surveys
Louis, Missouri, ranked 13.
Falcon products now have annual sales of more than $0. 222 billion, and in this year\'s survey, the company rose two places to 11.
Two of the top four companies also bought the top 25 members last year.
Acquisition of Herman Miller No. 16 No. 2-
Georg Brickell ranked fourth
Ranked Haworth to buy Smed International No. 15.
Both mergers have proved beneficial to all interested parties, and have proven compatible so far, lyrden said.
\"There are various reasons for the company being acquired, not just because the company is in trouble and is looking for someone to take over,\" says Leiden . \".
\"In the case of Smed and Geiger Brickel, the initial management is still there and the transition is very smooth and barely noticeable.
Haworth and Herman Miller have both acquired profitable companies that have helped them fill in market areas or niche markets where they are not involved at all, or are not as strong as they are now.
\"Employee recruitment and profit margin are the most concerned issues with the lowest unemployment rate in recent memory, and employee recruitment/retention and employee compensation are the most concerned issues for contract and office furniture executives.
30% of executives said they were very concerned about the recruitment and retention of employees, and 50% said they were very concerned. Twenty-
2% of executives are very concerned about worker pay, and 44% are very concerned about employee pay.
Respondents also noted that they were using various options to address staffing and retention difficulties.
Finding employees is a top priority for most companies surveyed, and executives say all avenues are being explored.
\"Now, we are looking for alternative recruitment strategies,\" said Paul Simons of Mayline Group . \".
\"We are looking for every option to find and hire the people we need.
Robert Huber, CEO of the Indiana furniture industry, added that his company wants not only to hire competent employees, but also to train and retain existing employees of the company and to increase automation, to reduce the pressure on employees.
\"We continue to invest in the training of existing employees and change wages and benefits,\" said Hubler . \".
\"In order to reduce our labor demand, we have also invested a lot of money in equipment procurement.
\"12 annual contract furniture surveys on the survey of wood and wood products were mailed to companies believed to have annual sales of more than $30 million.
In addition, a page of forms was mailed to executives, factory managers and supervisors to understand their concerns in the industry.
